Rep. Nydia Velázquez, representative of New York’s 7th district since 1993, utilized social media to express her sentiments on a range of critical issues. Her recent posts addressed both the passing of a significant religious leader and notable social issues affecting her constituents and beyond.

On April 21, 2025, Velázquez mourned the death of Pope Francis, sharing her condolences with the global community. She stated, “I join millions around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. His legacy will live in the hearts of all who were touched by his compassion and courage. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Following this heartfelt post, on April 22, 2025, Velázquez turned her attention to climate change and its impact on New York. She declared, “New York is on the frontlines of the climate crisis: floods, heatwaves, rising seas.” She emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach via “a Green New Deal, clean energy, and justice for all.”

Later the same day, Velázquez addressed economic concerns in Puerto Rico, highlighting the financial impact of tax breaks for wealthy investors. She noted, “Puerto Rico is set to lose $4.5B by 2026 from tax breaks for wealthy investors, while costs rise & locals are pushed out.” Introducing her legislative proposal, she stated, “My bill will close loopholes for digital assets & end PR’s crypto tax haven status.” This measure aims to empower Puerto Ricans to take control of their economic future.

Nydia Velázquez, born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, currently resides in Brooklyn and has a longstanding history of service since replacing Stephen Solarz in Congress. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
