The New York Rangers are set to conclude the 2025 calendar year with a New Year’s Eve game against the Washington Capitals in Washington, ahead of the upcoming Winter Classic. The match will begin at 12:30 PM and will be broadcast on MSG and ESPN 880 AM radio.
In recent road performances, the Rangers have earned points in six of their last nine away games, holding a record of 5-3-1 during that stretch. Over their last 18 games overall, they have collected points in 12 contests (9-6-3). The team currently leads the NHL in road wins with 14 and ranks third for both road points (30) and faceoff win percentage on the road (55.2%). Their overall faceoff percentage stands at 53.9%, also third best in the league.
Defensively, New York has allowed an average of just 2.30 goals per game on the road—the lowest figure among all NHL teams—and is tied for seventh fewest goals allowed overall at 2.68 per game. In second periods specifically, they have conceded only 31 goals, tied for third fewest in the league.
The Rangers’ plus-17 goal differential on the road is fourth best league-wide; they have scored 70 goals as visitors this season, tying them for fourth most among all teams. Goaltenders for New York have combined for a .905 save percentage (tied fifth highest) and a goals against average of 2.64 (seventh lowest).
At even strength (5-on-5), they have allowed only 68 goals—tied for fifth fewest—and as visitors have led games for over eight hours total this season, which is third highest among NHL teams.
When scoring first, New York holds a record of 15-2-0; those fifteen wins are tied for seventh most when netting the opening goal. The team’s seven overtime or shootout victories are also tied for fifth most across the league.
Physical play remains central to their approach: The Rangers lead all teams with 1,056 hits and rank fifth in blocked shots (616). They’ve registered at least thirty hits in fourteen games so far this season—more than any other club.
Several players and staff members share connections between these two franchises. Forward Taylor Raddysh played last season with Washington, tallying twenty-seven points over eighty games. Conor Sheary spent three seasons with Washington from 2020–21 to 2022–23 before joining New York. Assistant coach Joe Sacco also played three seasons as a Capital from 1999–2002. On Washington’s side, Sonny Milano was born in Massapequa, NY while defenseman Dylan McIlrath played parts of four seasons with New York earlier in his career.
This season on the road specifically, New York has posted a record of fourteen wins, seven losses and two overtime/shootout losses (14-7-2), outscoring opponents by seventeen goals away from home (70 scored vs. fifty-three allowed). Through their first eleven away games this year they collected nineteen points—a franchise record start.
Since the beginning of the 2021–22 campaign, no NHL team has more road points than New York’s total of two hundred thirty-six; they are also tied atop league standings with one hundred eight away victories during that period.
Artemi Panarin continues to pace his team offensively with fourteen goals and twenty-five assists this year; he leads all Rangers skaters with thirty-nine points and one hundred twenty-two shots on goal through December’s end. Panarin reached his nine-hundredth career point earlier this month—becoming just sixth undrafted player since expansion era began to do so within eight hundred games or fewer—and now sits ninth all-time among franchise scorers after surpassing five hundred eighty-nine career points as a Ranger.
Panarin commented: “He recorded his 900th career point on Dec. 4 and became the sixth undrafted player since 1963-64 to do so in 800 games or less.”
Mika Zibanejad remains another key contributor: He leads all Rangers players with seven power play tallies this year while ranking second both in total goals (twelve) and overall points (twenty-nine). His recent form includes seventeen points over his past nineteen outings; Zibanejad is now one power play goal shy of matching New York’s franchise mark after notching his fiftieth career game-tying score earlier this month.
Vincent Trocheck has contributed consistently since returning from injury November tenth—posting twelve points across nineteen appearances recently—and ranks top five league-wide among frequent faceoff participants both by percentage won and total draws claimed since last season began.
Goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been instrumental during stretches where he helped secure results in eleven out of fifteen starts lately; he has held opponents to two or fewer scores sixteen times already—a figure matched by only one other goaltender across North America’s premier hockey circuit thus far into current campaign.
Will Cuylle stands out physically—leading teammates by wide margin with one hundred thirty-eight hits so far—which places him fifth overall throughout entire NHL field; historically he broke single-season hit records previously held within organization dating back nearly two decades.
Next up at home: The Rangers will host Utah Mammoth Monday January fifth at Madison Square Garden.
