The New York University women’s tennis team finished in sixth place at the University Athletic Association Championship after a 4–0 loss to Case Western Reserve University on April 26 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The result concludes NYU’s run in the tournament, with the team unable to overcome Case Western Reserve, who secured an early lead by winning the doubles point and then clinched victory through wins in singles matches. The outcome highlights both teams’ efforts and marks the end of NYU’s campaign for this championship.

Case Western Reserve took control early by winning doubles matches at both the first and second positions. Visnja Gusavac and Vera Bondarenko were defeated 6–3 at No. 1 doubles, while Victoria Wang and Emma Kast lost 6–2 at No. 2. The third pairing of Norah Staunton and Sophia Wright was trailing when play was stopped after the doubles point was decided.

In singles play, Gusavac fell 6–3, 6–0 at No. 1 singles, Wang lost her match at No. 2 by a score of 6–1, 6–0, and Sophia Yang was defeated at No. 3 singles with a score of 6–1, 6–3 before the match was officially called once Case Western reached four points. Other matches were still underway: Bondarenko led her contest after taking the first set and leading in the second; Siona Vallabhaneni narrowly dropped her opening set in a tiebreak; Aditi Narayan trailed closely in her match.

“The women had a good season overall,” said Head Coach Horace Choy. “They just didn’t bounce back well after yesterday’s marathon match. Case was well rested and played better, especially in the doubles. I know the returners are motivated to work hard over the summer heading into next year.”

Looking ahead, NYU awaits announcement of participants for the NCAA Division III Championships scheduled to begin May 18 in Chattanooga.
