The New York University women’s tennis team began its 2026 spring season with a 7–0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx on February 21.
NYU won all three doubles matches to secure the opening point. Sophia Yang and Visnja Gusavac earned a 7–6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Emma Kast and Victoria Wang posted a 6–0 win at No. 2, while Norah Staunton and Siona Vallabhaneni added a 6–2 result at No. 3.
In singles play, NYU claimed all six matches. Victoria Wang won her match at No. 1 singles by scores of 7–6, 7–6. At No. 2, Visnja Gusavac finished with a 6–3, 6–3 win, while Sophia Yang took the No. 3 spot with identical scores. Siona Vallabhaneni recorded a 6–4, 6–0 victory at No. 4 singles, and Aditi Narayan came back from behind to win her match at No. 5 by scores of 4–6, 7–5, and a match tiebreak of 10–8. Emma Kast completed the sweep with a decisive win at No. 6 singles, finishing with scores of 6–1, 6–0.
Head Coach Horace Choy commented on his team’s performance: “I was really happy with the way the women played,” said Head Coach Horace Choy. “First matches are always a little nervy for both returners and newcomers. I thought we did a very good job of settling in early and playing the level of tennis that we can. We got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles. Vic and Emma dominated their match and Norah and Siona won easily as well. Visnja and Sophia got down early but fought back to win in a tiebreaker. They faced four match points and came through. The singles were pretty straightforward and we were able to complete the sweep. It’s a good starting point and we hope to build from here.”
NYU will continue its season on Sunday, February 22, when it faces Union College in another matchup in the Bronx.
