The New York University women’s tennis team was defeated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 5–2, in a match held on Friday, February 27, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
During doubles play, NYU managed to secure one win but lost the overall doubles point. The No. 2 pair of Emma Kast and Victoria Wang claimed a close victory with a 7–6 score. MIT took both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts by scores of 6–2.
In singles competition, NYU achieved one win out of six matches. Vera Bondarenko provided the team’s only singles victory at the No. 4 position after dropping the first set 6–3, winning the second set by the same score, and finishing with another 6–3 in the third set.
Other singles matches were closely contested. Victoria Wang extended her match at No. 1 singles to three sets but ultimately lost 6–4, 4–6, 6–2. Norah Staunton also forced a deciding tiebreaker at No. 3 singles before falling short with a final score of 6–4, 3–6, 13–11. Despite these efforts, MIT secured the win.
“It was a great early season test for both teams,” said Head Coach Horace Choy. “I think we were not aggressive enough in the doubles but picked it up in the singles. Lots of close matches but MIT was able to edge us. I like the fight of our team and know that we will learn from today.”
NYU is scheduled to play next against Babson College on Saturday, February 28 in Babson Park, Massachusetts.
