The New York University women’s tennis team lost 7–0 to Johns Hopkins University on March 14 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The match was significant as it marked the Violets’ first outdoor contest of the season. The team struggled to adjust to the conditions, while Johns Hopkins capitalized on their opportunities.

In doubles play, NYU was unable to secure a win and conceded the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of Visnja Gusavac and Sophia Yang lost 6–4, while Emma Kast and Victoria Wang also fell by a score of 6–4 at No. 2. Norah Staunton and Sophia Wright were defeated 6–1 at No. 3.

Johns Hopkins continued their strong performance in singles matches, winning all six contests. Gusavac lost at No. 1 singles (6–3, 6–2), Wang dropped a close match at No. 2 (7–5, 6–4), and Yang was defeated at No. 3 (7–5, 6–1). Vera Bondarenko fell at No. 4 (6–0, 6–1), Siona Vallabhaneni lost a competitive match at No. 5 (7–5, 6–4), and Kast was beaten at No. 6 (6–2, 6–3).

“The match was our first outdoor match of the season and we didn’t make the adjustments we needed to while Johns Hopkins did,” said Head Coach Horace Choy. “We need to learn from this and apply it to our next match and the rest of the season.”

NYU will look to rebound when they travel to face the University of Rochester on Saturday, March 28.
