The New York University women’s swimming and diving team, ranked second nationally, won its final dual meet of the season on January 17. The Violets defeated Johns Hopkins University, which is ranked nineteenth, with a score of 199-62. This victory improved NYU’s dual meet record to 3-1 overall and 3-0 against Division III opponents.
Swimming Head Coach Trevor Miele commented on the team’s performance: “The team came out strong right away, especially in the 200 medley relay, and set the tone for the rest of the meet. The energy on the pool deck was exactly what you want on Senior Day.”
Before the competition began, NYU recognized its thirteen outgoing seniors as well as individual national champions from last season.
In the opening event, NYU secured first and second place in the 200 medley relay. The “A” relay squad—Maeve O’Donnell, Babette Bradley, Andrea Wu, and Kaley McIntyre—won with a time of 1:44.83.
Aanya Wala led a sweep in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.21, followed by teammates Bethany Spangler and Alice Ciobanu in second and third places respectively.
Kaley McIntyre claimed her first win in the 200 freestyle at 1:51.79; Emery Muller finished second.
NYU also placed first and third in the 100 backstroke; Nicole Ranile won at 57.25 seconds while Eloise Emig was third at 58.23 seconds.
Babette Bradley led a sweep in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.78), with Sammy Wong (1:06.01) taking second and Kate Steinmeier (1:07.93) third.
In other events:
– Reina Gomez took first place in both butterfly events—the 200-yard race (2:04.76) by six seconds ahead of teammate Lina Wordelman (2:10.77), then again in the shorter distance at 57.04.
– Maeve O’Donnell earned her second win with a time of 23.93 in the 50 freestyle.
– McIntyre posted another win in the 100 freestyle at 51.25 seconds.
– Wong narrowly edged Bradley for first place in the closely contested 200 breaststroke.
– Llew Ladomirak won her debut race as a Violet by finishing first in the 500 freestyle.
– Emig secured her own victory later with a wire-to-wire performance in the individual medley (2:11.42).
NYU closed out swimming competition with another relay victory; Ranile, Wu, Muller, and McIntyre took first place in the concluding event.
Diving events were held before swimming commenced as an exhibition during Senior Day festivities:
Meera Kasturi set a new program record for one-meter diving with a score of 334.85; Maya Williams finished second with a score of 285.25 during her return after studying abroad.
Kasturi nearly broke another record but maintained top placement overall while Williams secured second place again later that day.
Diving Head Coach Todd Kolean said about his athletes’ performances: “It was a good Senior Day for the Violets,” he stated.”Meera continues to impress with a record-breaking day and Maya performed well in first meet since returning from studying abroad.”
NYU’s next meet will take place January 23rd at Massachusetts Institute of Technology against MIT and Williams College; diving starts at ten o’clock followed by swimming competitions later that afternoon.
