New York University’s women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 72 games with a decisive 89-37 victory over SUNY Oneonta at the Montreal Shootout on December 30 in Montreal, Canada.
The Violets, currently ranked number one and holding a 10-0 record this season, started strong by scoring the first nine points of the game. By the end of the first quarter, NYU led SUNY Oneonta (now 5-3) by a score of 21-4. During that period, NYU forced seven turnovers and limited their opponents to just two successful field goals out of twelve attempts.
SUNY Oneonta was held scoreless in the second quarter until only three minutes and twenty seconds remained before halftime. At halftime, NYU led 44-11.
The Violets continued to widen their lead throughout the game. After three quarters, they were ahead 62-24. Their largest margin came late in the fourth quarter when Olive Batch hit a three-pointer to make it 84-32 with less than three minutes left.
Aila Kaibara and Olivia Lagao each scored 14 points for NYU. Megan Ohonde contributed 13 points, while Olive Batch added nine and Caitlin Kenney had eight. Yasmene Clark recorded a game-high eleven rebounds; Ohonde collected eight rebounds as well.
Kaibara also led her team with four assists. Caroline Peper and Eden Williamson each made four steals.
NYU’s current winning streak is now the fifth-longest in NCAA women’s basketball history across all divisions. The team is now one win away from tying Division II Ashland University for fourth place on the all-time list at 73 consecutive wins.
NYU will return home for its next game against Skidmore College on Monday, January 5 at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm.
