NYU men’s swimming secures second place at UAA Championships

The New York University men’s swimming and diving team secured second place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which concluded at the Myers-McLoraine Pool on the University of Chicago campus. The Violets held onto the runner-up position for three consecutive days during the four-day event, finishing with a total of 1,626 points. Emery University claimed first place with 1,753.5 points.

Swimming Head Coach Trevor Miele commented on his team’s performance: “I’m really proud of how this team performed. They had a tremendous meet with a number of amazing individual performances and I am ready for them to head to NCAA’s.”

Adam Mekrami started the final session by earning second place in the mile swim, recording a time of 15:36.38. Evan Jue followed closely, taking fourth with a time of 15:43.34.

In the 200 backstroke final, Teddy Cross achieved an NCAA “A cut” qualifying time of 1:42.74 to win first place, while teammate Teddy McQuaid finished second at 1:45.92.

Pierce Downs set a new NYU record in the 100 freestyle by finishing in 43.71 seconds and securing second place.

The Violets placed second, third, and fourth in the 200 breaststroke final with Victor Derani leading at 1:57.96, followed by Conner Dean (1:58.14) and Maksym Nechydyuk (1:58.50).

The weekend concluded with NYU’s third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as Downs, Cross, Sean Li, and Greg Wehbe posted a time of 2:57.58.

NYU is scheduled to host its Winter Swimming Invitational on February 21 before participating in the NCAA Regional Diving Championships from February 27-28 and then moving on to compete at the Division III Championships from March 18-21.
