Nydia Velázquez voices support for Dreamers and federal benefits amid recent policy debates

Rep. Nydia Velázquez, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 7th district since 1993, has recently addressed several national and international issues on her social media account.

On July 29, 2025, Velázquez commented on the treatment of Dreamers in the United States. She wrote, “Telling Dreamers to ‘self-deport’ is nothing short of cruel. These are young people who grew up here, went to school here, and built their lives here. This is their home, and I will not stop fighting for them.”

The following day, July 30, Velázquez highlighted an incident involving violence in the West Bank. She stated, “Awdah Hathaleen, a teacher, father and activist, was shot & killed by an Israeli settler while standing in his own village. The settler had been sanctioned by the US for violent attacks on Palestinians, but Trump lifted those penalties. His murder is the result of US and”

Later that same day, she addressed concerns about federal benefits programs in another post: “First, they gutted Medicaid. Now they’re coming for Social Security, and they’re not even trying to hide it. We won’t let them rip away a benefit that millions of Americans have worked their whole lives to earn.”

Velázquez has represented New York’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Stephen Solarz in 1993. Born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently residing in Brooklyn at age 70, she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras with a BA in 1974.
