Rep. Nydia Velázquez, U.S. Congresswoman representing New York’s 7th district since 1993, recently addressed her constituents through a series of posts on social media covering technology education, health care policy, and community mourning.

On July 30, 2025, Velázquez announced the opening of the Congressional App Challenge for local students. She wrote: “Attention NY-07 students: The Congressional App Challenge is now open! If you’re a middle or high school student with a passion for technology and innovation, I invite you to develop and submit your own original app. Your work could be showcased in the U.S. Capitol. Later that day, Velázquez gathered with health care workers at Wyckoff in Bushwick to address proposed health care funding reductions. She stated: “On Medicaid’s 60th anniversary, I gathered health care workers, hospital leaders, and patients at Wyckoff in Bushwick to speak out against the GOP’s massive health care cuts. This is the biggest attack on care in our nation’s history and we won’t stop fighting.”

On July 31, 2025, Velázquez commented on a recent loss within the law enforcement community: “Today, New Yorkers honored the life of NYPD Det. Didarul Islam, a devoted husband, father, and hero who gave his life to save others. He came to this country seeking opportunity and built a life of service protecting New Yorkers. My heart is with his family, his fellow”.

Velázquez has represented New York’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Stephen Solarz in 1993 and currently resides in Brooklyn after being born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953. She holds a BA from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras.
