Rep. Nydia Velázquez, a U.S. Congresswoman representing New York’s 7th district since 1993, has used her social media platform in recent days to address issues of government accountability, immigration enforcement, and the looming threat of a federal government shutdown.

On September 21, 2025, Velázquez criticized former Trump administration official Thomas Homan, stating: “Homan built his career smearing immigrants as criminals. Now it looks like he was the crook all along. The Trump administration is filled with corruption and graft from top to bottom. Homan should be fired and prosecuted.”

Two days later, on September 23, Velázquez highlighted her legislative efforts regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) practices. She wrote: “Today on @democracynow I spoke about my bill, the No Masks for ICE Act, which would prohibit ICE agents from wearing masks while carrying out arrests and detentions. Federal agents should never hide their identity from the public. Transparency and accountability are”

Later that day, she commented on partisan divisions in Congress amid concerns over a possible government shutdown: “House: Republican. Senate: Republican. White House: Republican. Republicans are once again dragging our nation toward a government shutdown. Threatening paychecks for federal workers, delaying vital services for families, and destabilizing our economy. Working people will pay”

Nydia Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and has resided in Brooklyn during her congressional tenure. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras in 1974.
