Rep. Nydia Velázquez, U.S. Congresswoman representing New York’s 7th district since 1993, shared a series of posts on social media reflecting on the legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson, extending greetings for Ramadan, and commenting on the resumption of Gateway Tunnel construction.

On February 17, 2026, Velázquez paid tribute to civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, writing: “Rev. Jesse Jackson dedicated his life to the belief that our struggles are connected and that justice belongs to everyone.

To me, he was an adviser and a friend. To America, he was a moral compass. Rest in peace, Reverend. Keep hope alive.”

The following day, Velázquez marked the beginning of Ramadan with a message directed at her constituents and others observing the holy month: “Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing in New York City and around the world!

May this holy month bring you and your family peace, reflection, and blessings.” (posted February 18, 2026).

Later on February 18, Velázquez addressed infrastructure developments affecting New Yorkers. She commented on legal decisions regarding federal funding for the Gateway Tunnel project: “The Trump admin’s freeze on Gateway Tunnel funding was illegal from day one & the courts agreed.

This is a win for New Yorkers, & I’m glad construction is set to resume.

This project needs guaranteed, uninterrupted funding, the games and obstruction must end.”

Velázquez has represented New York’s 7th District in Congress since succeeding Stephen Solarz in 1993. Born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently residing in Brooklyn at age 70, she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras with a BA in 1974.
