U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez, who has represented New York’s 7th District in Congress since 1993, raised concerns this week about immigration detention practices, legislative procedures, and the ongoing energy crisis in Puerto Rico through a series of posts on her official social media account.

On July 22, Velázquez posted allegations regarding the treatment of immigrants at a federal facility: “Leaked footage confirms what we’ve known all along: 26 Federal Plaza is a secret detention site where immigrants are being held in overcrowded, inhumane conditions. @DHSgov has spent months lying to cover it up. We need answers. We demand accountability.” The statement called for transparency from the Department of Homeland Security and demanded accountability regarding the reported conditions at 26 Federal Plaza.

Later that same day, Velázquez commented briefly on legislative proceedings by writing, “Republicans cancelling votes:” with an attached link.

On July 23, she addressed Puerto Rico’s energy challenges: “Since its arrival, LUMA has deepened the energy crisis in Puerto Rico with a management marked by negligence. I welcome @AAPPPuertoRico Notice of Disputes to LUMA Energy. This must be a fair, transparent process focused on the welfare of the people. I am ready to collaborate”. The message expressed support for formal complaints against LUMA Energy and called for a transparent resolution process prioritizing residents’ needs.

Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and has lived in Brooklyn during her tenure in Congress. She holds a BA from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras (1974). Her longstanding role as representative began after succeeding Stephen Solarz in 1993.
