Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who has represented New York’s 7th District in the U.S. Congress since 1993, addressed several issues in recent social media posts, ranging from Puerto Rico’s power crisis to regulation of the textured hair industry and cryptocurrency policy.
On July 16, 2025, Velázquez highlighted ongoing energy challenges in Puerto Rico and criticized Golden Tree Asset Management for its involvement with PREPA’s debt. She stated: “Power outages are part of daily life for Puerto Ricans. Meanwhile, vulture fund Golden Tree is trying to cash in on PREPA’s debt putting profits over people. At today’s NRC hearing, I made it clear: This is Golden Tree vs. the People of Puerto Rico. And we know which side we’re”.
The following day, Velázquez focused on inclusivity within the beauty industry by reintroducing legislation aimed at addressing gaps in cosmetology education related to textured hair care. On July 17, she wrote: “The textured hair industry is worth $2.5B but most cosmetology schools still don’t teach how to care for it. Today, I reintroduced The Texture Positive Act of 2025 to invest in inclusive training by partnering with women & minority-led experts. It’s time to close the gap.”
Later that same day, Velázquez turned her attention to federal cryptocurrency policy and alleged conflicts of interest involving former President Donald Trump. She posted: “Trump is using the White House to line his pockets with crypto cash. Congress can’t stay silent as we witness this blatant self-dealing. We need regulation that protects the public, not Trump’s wallet. All 3 of the GOP crypto bills are silent on this topic. I’m voting NO.”
Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently resides in Brooklyn; she earned a BA from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras in 1974.
