Rep. Nydia Velázquez, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 7th district since 1993, has recently addressed several national and local issues on her social media account.
On August 4, 2025, Velázquez highlighted public health concerns related to hepatitis B and C, stating: “Hepatitis B & C are preventable, treatable, & still taking too many lives. @RepHankJohnson & I introduced a resolution recognizing World Hepatitis Day to push awareness, equity, & science-based policy—not RFK Jr.’s conspiracy-driven attacks on vaccines.”
Later that day, she commented on political developments in Texas involving Governor Greg Abbott and legislative actions concerning redistricting: “Greg Abbott is now ordering the arrest of lawmakers for standing up to Donald Trump’s corrupt, gerrymandered map. Texas Democrats are defending democracy while Republicans resort to authoritarian tactics to cling to power. We’ve got their back.”
On August 5, 2025, Velázquez criticized changes made by former President Donald Trump regarding Puerto Rico’s Fiscal Board: “Trump’s Fiscal Board purge isn’t about reform. It’s a move to stack the Board with people who will keep putting hedge funds first, leaving Puerto Ricans to pay the price. I’ll keep fighting for a just recovery & the day Puerto Ricans can govern without unelected control.”
Nydia Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently resides in Brooklyn at age 70. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
