New York City FC II faced a challenging match against Philadelphia Union II, ending in a 2-0 defeat. This was their first game at Icahn Stadium, which will be their home for the rest of the season. Despite several tactical changes and opportunities created by players like Julien Lacher and Chris Tiao, NYCFC II could not score.
The match saw Head Coach Matt Pilkington shift from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-3 formation. The game started cautiously with both teams defending well. Philadelphia’s Eddie Davis had an early chance but couldn’t beat NYCFC II’s goalkeeper Alex Rando. In response, Luka Sunjic tried his luck for NYCFC II, but the shot was comfortably saved.
Philadelphia came close to scoring when Davis’ header hit both posts before being cleared by NYCFC II. Before halftime, Markus Anderson had another opportunity for Philadelphia but failed to trouble Rando.
In the second half, Anderson scored for Philadelphia just before the hour mark. Pilkington responded by bringing Uriel Zeitz into midfield. NYCFC II nearly equalized when Chris Tiao’s cross was deflected for a corner.
Julien Lacher also came close after cutting inside from the left but missed narrowly wide of the post. Further substitutions were made as James Bilden and Lucas De Pinho entered the field.
Philadelphia secured their victory in the 82nd minute with Malik Jakupovic scoring from close range. They were reduced to ten men after Isaiah Le Flore received a second yellow card just before stoppage time, but NYCFC II couldn’t capitalize on this advantage.
Next up for New York City FC II is Orlando City B on Sunday, August 3rd at 7:00 PM ET.
