Will Valentine, BSN, RN, has experienced a noteworthy career trajectory at St. Mary’s Healthcare. Initially joining as an agency nurse, Valentine quickly advanced to the role of nurse manager in the Med/Surg units.

Valentine’s path to nursing was unexpected. Originally from Long Island, he attended SUNY Oneonta and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. His interest in nursing emerged after working at Stony Brook University in the pathology lab, leading him to pursue an accelerated nursing program at Adelphi University and eventually secure a position at Northwell Health.

Relocating to Galway due to his wife’s ties to the region, Valentine worked as a travel nurse at Saratoga Hospital and Albany Med before arriving at St. Mary’s. After two years there, he was offered a managerial position due to his performance and dedication.

Reflecting on his journey, Valentine remarked: “I never would have imagined as a kid being a nurse,” adding that his experience has been rewarding beyond expectations. He praised St. Mary’s for its close-knit community: “Everybody knew each other’s names, across all disciplines.”

Valentine values both managing his team and maintaining bedside involvement: “I manage the team, but I still jump in at the bedside at times.” He appreciates St. Mary’s approach to employee growth and work-life balance: “There’s room to grow here… they allow for an excellent work-life balance.”

He noted that unlike other hospitals where he worked previously, St. Mary’s offers strong support tailored to individual needs: “Here, it’s not the machine.”
