The New York Liberty announced the signing of Belgian forward Emma Meesseman, a former WNBA Finals MVP, marking her return to the league for the first time since 2022.

“Emma Meesseman’s return to the WNBA is a tremendous moment for our league, and the fact that she chose New York for her next chapter speaks volumes,” said Jonathan Kolb, General Manager, New York Liberty. “She is one of the most skilled, intelligent, and unselfish players in the world and her presence elevates everyone around her. Emma brings invaluable experience, championship pedigree, and a unique versatility that fits seamlessly into our group as we continue our relentless pursuit of a title in 2025.”

Meesseman last played in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky during the 2022 season. That year she was named an All-Star and averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

Recently, Meesseman led Belgium’s national team to victory at the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket tournament and earned Most Valuable Player honors for a second consecutive time. From 2022 to 2025, she was named FIBA EuroLeague Women’s MVP three times in a row while averaging over 16 points per game and maintaining one of the highest field goal percentages in each season.

In addition to winning a WNBA championship with Washington Mystics in 2019—where she was named Finals MVP—Meesseman’s career includes six EuroLeague titles, two Olympic appearances for Belgium (2021 and 2024), two selections to the All-Star Five at those Olympics, and two WNBA All-Star nods (2015 and 2022).

She joins an international Liberty roster featuring other Olympians such as Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally (Germany), Marine Johannès (France), Stephanie Talbot (Australia), Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart (USA). The team is coached by Sandy Brondello from Australia.

Meesseman will debut with New York tonight against Connecticut Sun wearing jersey number 33.
