New York City FC will travel to face FC Cincinnati on Saturday evening, with kickoff set for 7:30PM ET.
One of the main features of Pat Noonan’s tenure as head coach in Cincinnati has been his use of a back three. While Noonan often changes the setup in front of this trio, Miles Robinson, Matt Miazga, and Nick Hagglund have formed a consistent defensive group. Cincinnati is currently at the top of the Eastern Conference and is aiming for its second Supporters’ Shield in three seasons.
Noonan also uses defenders as wingbacks. DeAndre Yedlin, a former U.S. international, brings speed and coverage on the right side, while Lukas Engel, who is on loan from Middlesbrough, adds experience. This system allows Cincinnati to keep the field wide and create space both on the flanks and centrally for playmaker Evander. Evander, who previously played for Portland Timbers, has become an important player for Cincinnati this season.
New York City FC will need to control these spaces and stay compact when they do not have possession if they want to limit Cincinnati’s chances in attack.
New York City FC has recently found success away from home. They have recorded two wins and a draw in their last MLS road matches, which has helped them remain above the playoff line during a close race in the Eastern Conference.
The team’s recent form includes coming from behind to win their last three matches. Pascal Jansen challenged his players to start games better after conceding early against Nashville SC last Sunday but also praised them for showing character by turning those games around.
Saturday’s match gives New York City FC an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the top teams in the conference. A positive result would send a strong message to other teams in the East.
In terms of head-to-head history between these clubs, New York City FC leads with nine wins compared to six for Cincinnati. All nine victories for New York City have come in MLS play; Cincinnati has four MLS wins over New York City.
Only one goal was scored across their two most recent meetings (including regular season and playoffs), with Julián Fernández scoring earlier this season to secure three points for New York City FC. In contrast, previous encounters between these teams often featured high scores — including an eight-goal game where New York City nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit before settling for a draw after Brenner equalized late in the match.
It remains uncertain whether Saturday’s game will produce another high-scoring contest.
