New York City FC lost 2-0 to D.C. United at Citi Field on May 4. Louis Munteanu scored both goals for the visitors, with one in the first half and another from the penalty spot in the second half.

The match was significant as New York City FC aimed to build momentum after a recent win against the Red Bulls in the U.S. Open Cup. The defeat ended their hopes of consecutive victories and highlighted challenges faced by Pascal Jansen’s side.

Jansen made changes to his lineup before kickoff, bringing in Strahinja Tanasijević for suspended Tayvon Gray and initially selecting Talles Magno over Malachi Jones. However, Magno was forced out due to a warm-up injury, allowing Jones back into the starting eleven. Early opportunities came from Agustín Ojeda and Kai Trewin, but neither could convert their chances into goals.

D.C. United capitalized on a defensive mishap when Munteanu scored following a long throw that deflected off Kai Trewin’s foot in the 29th minute. Injuries continued to affect New York City FC as Aiden O’Neill left with an injury before halftime, replaced by Andrés Perea.

Despite efforts from Nicolás Fernández Mercau and others—who were denied by former New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson—the home team could not find an equalizer. In the second half, Moralez had a goal disallowed for offside while Fernández Mercau drew another save from Johnson.

D.C.’s second goal came after Keaton Parks conceded a penalty following another long throw-in situation; Munteanu converted it in the 75th minute to secure victory for D.C. United.

Looking ahead, New York City FC will face Columbus Crew on Sunday, May 10 at 4:30PM ET.
