New York City FC II was defeated 3-0 by Toronto FC II on Sunday in an away match. The loss follows a recent 3-1 win over Columbus Crew 2 for New York City FC II. A win in Toronto would have moved the team above their opponents into seventh place.
Toronto opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Nathaniel Edwards converted a pass from Hassan Ayari. Before that, Piero Elias had a chance for New York but was denied by Toronto goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario. Luka Sunjic also tested De Rosario with a shot, but it was saved.
After halftime, Markus Cimermancic extended Toronto’s lead to 2-0 in the 47th minute and added another goal in the 68th minute. Despite efforts from New York City FC II substitutes, including James Bilden and Eligio Guarino, the team could not find the net.
Head coach Matt Pilkington made several changes during the match to try to shift momentum, but his side was unable to score. “Unfortunately, they could not find a goal, and were forced to accept a disappointing 3-0 defeat on the road,” according to the club’s recap.
New York City FC II will next play Chicago Fire FC II on Sunday, September 14 at 9:00PM ET.
