New York City FC lost 3-0 to Club Puebla in the Leagues Cup match held on Tuesday night. The goals for Club Puebla were scored by Juan Manuel Fedorco in the second minute, Emiliano Gómez in the 38th, and Owen Gonzalez in the 88th.
Head Coach Pascal Jansen made several changes to the starting lineup, giving Seymour Reid and Nicolás Fernández Mercau their first starts of the season. Despite entering the match after a recent win against FC Dallas, New York City FC conceded an early goal from a Puebla corner kick.
Club Puebla continued to create chances in the first half but were met with saves from NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese. New York City FC’s Nicolás Díaz had a close attempt blocked by Johnny Shore. A penalty awarded to NYCFC was overturned after a VAR review later in the half.
Before halftime, Justin Haak nearly scored for NYCFC when his volley hit the crossbar following a set-piece. In the second half, substitutions included Andrés Perea and Kevin O’Toole replacing Nico Cavallo and Fernández Mercau, while Tayvon Gray and Máximo Carrizo came on for Mitja Ilenič and Shore.
Puebla threatened again but was stopped by O’Toole’s defensive effort. Alonso Martínez came off the bench for NYCFC and created two scoring opportunities—one of which forced a save from Jesús Rodríguez and another that hit the crossbar.
Despite pressure late in the game from New York City FC, Puebla secured their third goal through Owen González near full time.
New York City FC will next play Club Leon in another Leagues Cup match scheduled for Friday, August 1 at 6:00 PM ET.
