New York City FC began its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign with a 5-2 victory over Westchester SC on April 15.
The result allows New York City FC to progress to the next round of the competition, marking a strong start for the team as it looks to advance further in the tournament.
AgustÃn Ojeda opened the scoring for New York City FC in the 13th minute after combining with Seymour Reid, but Daniel Burko equalized for Westchester SC nine minutes later. The visitors regained their lead when Talles Magno converted a penalty following a foul on him by Conor McGlynn. Magno added his second goal before halftime, and Arnau Farnós scored his first career goal on his debut start, giving New York City FC a commanding advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Kevin Pierre narrowly missed extending the lead before Talles Magno completed his hat trick with a header from Tayvon Gray’s cross in the 70th minute. Westchester’s Kyle Evans scored their second goal late in the match, but it was not enough to close the gap.
Head coach Pascal Jansen made several changes from their previous lineup against Vancouver Whitecaps, including first starts for Farnós and Pierre and substitutions throughout both halves. Kamran Acito also made his First Team debut during this game.
Looking ahead, New York City FC will face Charlotte FC at Citi Field on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30PM ET.
