Barclays Center has unveiled a new public art installation celebrating the 2024 WNBA champions, the New York Liberty. The exhibit, titled “The Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions,” was created by artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. Each player from the 2024 team is depicted in a nine-foot-tall double-sided portrait. One side shows them in uniform, while the other features them with their chosen family members.
Frazier traveled to various locations, including the Bahamas and several U.S. states, to capture where each player’s heart lies. The installation symbolizes strength, legacy, and sisterhood and pays homage to the Statue of Liberty’s iconic stance.
The portraits will be on display throughout the WNBA season outside Barclays Center. Governor Clara Wu Tsai and BSE Global plan to expand this initiative into a comprehensive public art program featuring more installations and artists.
“The Liberty Portraits” recognizes the team’s achievements in an impressive manner befitting their championship status.
