Montefiore Health System is marking the 20th anniversary of its Project Bravo Food Pantry, an initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity among high-risk individuals and families in the Bronx. The program, which operates with grant funding, has provided fresh produce and healthy food three days per week for over two decades. In 2024, Project Bravo supported 40,000 residents of the Bronx.

The pantry serves thousands of people each week, welcoming both walk-ins and referrals from community partners and Montefiore Medical Group clinics. It works in partnership with organizations such as Grow NYC, Food Bank of New York, and United Way to distribute not only nutritious food but also baby formula, household supplies like laundry detergent, and holiday meals.

A recent study published in Pediatrics by researchers at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore highlighted that one in seven children living in households receiving assistance through WIC or SNAP still face food insecurity. This research underscores the ongoing need for services like Project Bravo to support families who may not have reliable access to adequate nutrition.

“It has been our privilege to help fill the gaps that families experience, from healthful food to warm clothes, we see the needs of our neighbors and are here to help, together with our community partners,” said Mrs. Tynisha Malone, MPA, Program Director of the Project Bravo Food Pantry.

In addition to food assistance, participants can receive toiletries and feminine hygiene products donated by big box stores and local colleges. For nearly 15 years, Mrs. Malone and two volunteers have also collected items such as Halloween candy and toys for distribution during holidays.

Bronx resident Dwight shared his experience: “Project Bravo is a place I can rely on for many resources. I get fresh and healthy food to make soups and casseroles, as well as access to health education. I also enjoy the cooking and painting classes available here too. Project Bravo provides sustenance and support in many ways.”
