The New York University men’s volleyball team, ranked eighth nationally, lost a close five-set match to the 16th-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday, March 7, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

NYU started strong by winning the first two sets. The opening set saw MIT take an early lead at 11-6 before NYU narrowed the gap with a run and eventually finished with four straight points to win 25-22. In the second set, NYU maintained control throughout and secured a 25-17 victory.

However, momentum shifted in the third set as MIT took over after NYU’s brief lead at 13-12. The Engineers did not trail again in that set and closed it out 25-20. The fourth set remained competitive until late when MIT used a run to gain separation and forced a fifth set after winning 25-20.

In the deciding frame, NYU led early at 5-3 but could not hold on as MIT responded with a decisive run to win the final set 15-11 and secure the match.

Emerson Evans led NYU’s offense with 20 kills and posted a .333 hitting percentage. Devyn Nguyen contributed with 42 assists.

NYU will next play Emmanuel College in Boston on Sunday at noon.
