Mia Broom, a sophomore guard at Columbia, became a key player in the team’s run to a Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) title, according to an April 18 article by Jenn Hatfield of The IX Basketball.
Broom’s journey highlights her dedication and work ethic, which have been apparent since her early days on the team. Her father often told her, “If you’re not sweating in warmups, you’re not warming up correctly.” This mindset carried into college basketball and was noticed by Columbia’s strength coaches during her first game at Duke in December 2024. They advised her to slow down after seeing how much effort she put into warmups.
Head coach Megan Griffith recalled that about six weeks later, before Broom’s only start of her freshman season at Yale, she had already sweated through her uniform during warmups. “She played the game before the game,” Griffith said in March 2026. “… I was like, ‘Holy bananas.'”
By the end of Broom’s sophomore season, this intensity proved valuable for Columbia. With two starters out of action during the WBIT tournament run, Broom increased her averages significantly—scoring 17.4 points with 6.2 rebounds and five assists per game over five tournament games compared to lower numbers earlier in the season.
