Columbia University’s women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against La Salle University on Sunday at Commisso Stadium in New York. The match marked Columbia’s return home after more than two weeks on the road.
La Salle opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Elizabeth Estrada delivered a corner kick that, after several deflections, was finished by Kameron Rase past Columbia goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney. The first half ended with La Salle leading 1-0.
Columbia responded strongly in the second half. Sammie Moncion set up Krystal Medina for the equalizer, bringing the score to 1-1. “Sammie Moncion had the play of the day, finding Krystal Medina with a beautiful pass leading to an easy score for the forward to even up the match at 1-1,” according to a statement from Columbia Athletics.
The Lions created several opportunities to take the lead, particularly in the 73rd minute when Maia Tabion’s shot was saved by La Salle goalkeeper Yaracs Mackenna. Angel Akanyirige attempted another shot on the rebound, but Mackenna made a second save while still recovering from her initial stop.
Columbia held statistical advantages over La Salle, outshooting them 10-6 overall and holding a 4-2 edge in shots on target.
The Lions will remain in New York City for their next match against Fordham University on Thursday at 7 p.m. The team’s full schedule is available online at GoColumbiaLions.com.
