In a recent article with The Well News, Dr. Michael P. Ast from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) shared his views on Medicare reform. Dr. Ast highlighted that Medicare funds approximately 8 million surgeries annually, including joint replacements and open-heart bypasses.

Dr. Ast explained that Medicare officials are introducing a new payment model aimed at improving follow-up care for seniors to prevent costly complications. This reform will hold hospitals accountable for medical expenses incurred by patients within 30 days post-discharge, motivating them to ensure comprehensive care and recovery support.

The proposed model is expected to enhance patient outcomes, potentially rewarding hospitals providing superior care with bonuses while reducing taxpayer costs through decreased complications and readmissions.

However, Dr. Ast emphasized that the success of this proposal hinges on Congress allowing hospitals to continue utilizing virtual physical therapy as part of their treatment plans.
