Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced on Mar. 11 the launch of more than 1,000 new 3-K seats and the introduction of 2,000 free 2-K seats across four communities in New York City. The announcement marks a significant step toward universal child care for families throughout the city.
The expansion aims to address high demand for early childhood education, with over half of New York City’s school districts set to benefit from additional capacity. Mayor Mamdani visited classrooms and child care centers in all five boroughs to highlight these developments, emphasizing the city’s commitment to supporting its youngest residents.
Last week, Mayor Mamdani joined Governor Kathy Hochul to announce the communities selected for the first rollout of the city’s new 2-K program. The mayor also celebrated with preschoolers on Staten Island as part of the ongoing effort to expand access to early learning opportunities through increased availability of 3-K seats across neighborhoods where they are most needed.
These initiatives are part of a broader investment in child care made just eight days into Mayor Mamdani’s administration. At that time, he and Governor Hochul committed $73 million for the first year of the 2-K program and $100 million aimed at improving the existing 3-K system.
To keep families informed about these changes, Mayor Mamdani visited child care centers in each initial 2-K community, participated in press conferences, released informational videos on social media, and appeared on various news outlets. Emmy Liss, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Child Care, also discussed these efforts with EducationWeek and Fox5.
The expansion is expected to increase access to early childhood education for many families across New York City. Further updates will be provided as implementation continues.
