Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles tendon during the New York Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day game at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. According to a report from The Athletic, Rivera will undergo surgery following the injury.

Rivera, who is 55 years old, was injured while playing center field in a game featuring former Yankees players. The incident occurred shortly after Rivera singled off Andy Pettitte. During his career, Rivera set the all-time Major League Baseball record for saves with 652, all as a member of the Yankees. He retired after the 2013 season and became the first unanimous inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Saturday’s event was notable as it marked the return of the Old-Timers’ Day game for the first time since 2019. This year’s gathering also commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Yankees’ 2000 World Series championship.
