Maimonides Health has launched a relief initiative to assist Caribbean communities affected by Hurricane Melissa. The program was developed in partnership with the African, Black & Caribbean Business Employee Resource Group (ABC BERG), the Human Resources Department, and nurse leaders at Maimonides Health.

The organization’s workforce includes many employees with ties to the Caribbean. After learning about the hurricane’s impact, staff expressed concern for relatives and a desire to help those affected.

“Our Caribbean colleagues and their families are an integral part of the Maimonides community,” said Jessica Wagner, Vice President of Nursing. “When members of our community are hurting, we come together. These efforts mirror our shared values of compassion, unity, and service.”

On November 19, ABC BERG held a bake sale fundraiser in the main lobby of Maimonides Medical Center. Staff from various departments contributed homemade baked goods, including traditional pastries and Caribbean specialties. Volunteers supported the event throughout the day.

“We are grateful to every employee who baked, purchased, or volunteered,” said Tonya Richards, Vice President of Human Resources and Organization Development. “Every contribution helps ensure that our Caribbean family feels supported during this challenging time.”

Alongside the bake sale, Maimonides Health donated emergency medical supplies to the Afya Foundation and began a canned goods and toiletries drive that will continue through November. Collection stations across its network have gathered nonperishable food items and hygiene products for distribution by partner organizations in affected areas.

Brooklyn’s large Caribbean diaspora is reflected within Maimonides Health’s staff. For many employees, these relief efforts hold personal significance as they support both their heritage and families abroad.

Maimonides Health plans to keep monitoring needs in the region and may expand its support as recovery continues. Staff and community members are encouraged to participate in ongoing relief activities.
