Liverpool FC, established in 1892, is the reigning Premier League champion. The club has won multiple major titles including 20 league championships, eight FA Cups, 10 League Cups, six European Cups, three UEFA Cups, and four European Super Cups. This appearance marks Liverpool’s third at the current Yankee Stadium; previous matches include a draw against Sporting CP in 2019 and a penalty shootout win over Manchester City in 2014 after a tied game in regulation. Liverpool also played at the original Yankee Stadium in 1953.
Wrexham AFC was founded in 1864 and is recognized as the third-oldest professional soccer team worldwide. The club recently achieved three consecutive promotions within English football, advancing from the National League at the end of the 2022-23 season to play in the Championship this year. This period of success began after Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over ownership on February 9, 2021. The club has gained international recognition through its documentary “Welcome to Wrexham.” Wrexham holds a record for winning the Welsh Cup 23 times and has had notable victories against top clubs in both domestic and European competitions. Its home stadium, STōK Cae Ras, is noted as the oldest stadium still hosting international games.
Yankee Stadium has hosted many soccer events featuring international clubs throughout its history. Since becoming home to Major League Soccer’s New York City FC in 2015, it has held seven European friendlies with teams such as AC Milan, Manchester City, Sporting CP, Spain’s national team, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, and Ireland’s national team.
