The New York University men’s soccer team visited Gordon Field in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, August 31, for a match against the #23-ranked Vassar College Brewers. This was NYU’s first appearance at the venue.
Vassar took control early in the game, scoring twice in the first half. The Brewers managed 11 shots compared to NYU’s two, with five of those on target. NYU goalkeeper Ludvig Hilberts made three saves during this period but conceded goals to Jared Fiske and Zapp Hotz.
Fiske scored in the 16th minute after receiving a cross from Arden Tobolski. Shortly after, Tobolski delivered a free kick that led to a shot by Mauricio Mejia and a rebound goal by Hotz, giving Vassar a 2-0 lead.
NYU responded late in the second half. In the 77th minute, Terra Nagai capitalized on an errant pass and was fouled inside the box by Vassar’s Koray Tekin. Nagai converted the penalty for his first goal of the season. Two minutes later, Ethan Zarka tied the match with a free kick that found its way past the Vassar keeper.
With just over seven minutes remaining, Tobolski assisted again, delivering a corner kick that Fiske headed across goal for what proved to be the game-winning score. NYU had several opportunities in the closing moments but could not equalize.
The Violets will play their next match on Saturday, September 6, facing Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m.
