As the Juilliard String Quartet nears its 80th anniversary, a significant change is taking place within its ranks. Leonard Fu, a Juilliard alumnus with an Artist Diploma from 2023, has been appointed as the new second violinist. He replaces Ronald Copes, who steps down after a notable 28-year tenure but will continue his role on the Juilliard violin faculty.
Juilliard President Damian Woetzel expressed excitement about Fu’s appointment: “It is such a special moment when one of our own returns to carry forward a Juilliard legacy. As a distinguished alum, Leonard Fu will bring artistic brilliance, curiosity, and a spirit of adventurous collaboration to his new role in the Juilliard String Quartet.”
Adam Meyer, Juilliard Provost, highlighted Copes’ contributions: “For nearly three decades, Ron Copes has brought brilliant musicianship and wise leadership to the group.” He also welcomed Fu’s unique artistic voice as part of the quartet’s future.
Fu joins current members Areta Zhulla (violin), Molly Carr (viola), and Astrid Schween (cello). The ensemble maintains a prestigious position among global quartets and continues to engage audiences worldwide through performances and recordings. The quartet is also known for their educational endeavors at Juilliard.
Reflecting on his journey with JSQ influences in Germany and the U.S., Fu said: “The quartet’s dedication to the full range of string repertoire deeply resonates with me.” Meanwhile, Copes shared his sentiments: “My time in the Juilliard String Quartet has truly been the inspiration of a lifetime.”
Zhulla, Carr, and Schween paid tribute to Copes’ tenure while welcoming Fu’s vibrant energy: “Ron’s intellectual rigor… have left an indelible legacy that will continue to inspire generations… we are thrilled to welcome violinist Leonard Fu.”
The JSQ remains committed to expanding string repertoire by commissioning works from contemporary composers like Lembit Beecher and Jörg Widmann. Details about their upcoming season will be released later.
