Legendary New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling is recovering after suffering a heart attack in early January. The 87-year-old, who retired in April 2024 following a broadcasting career that spanned 64 years, spoke with WFAN on Sunday about his health.
Sterling reported that while his heart is now healthy, he is still experiencing weakness in his legs. “I’m kind of waiting for the force to leave my legs and I can get back out there,” Sterling said. “I’m very fortunate, and all things are good.”
During his time at home recuperating, Sterling said he continued to watch sports including basketball and the Winter Olympics, and now enjoys Spring Training games as well. “I’ve always [felt] blessed [by] the fact, since I’ve been a little boy, that I’m a sports fan,” he said.
Sterling expressed gratitude for the support of his four children—Abigail, Bradford, Derek, and Veronica—who have helped him during his recovery. “I couldn’t have done anything without them,” he said. “They have been sensational in taking care of me.”
