Today, Jack D. Weiler Hospital at Montefiore Einstein announced that it has received the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. This award recognizes excellence in nursing advocacy, practice, and research. It is the second time Montefiore has been honored by the ENA for its dedication to high-quality care.

The Weiler Emergency Department (ED), which serves nearly 70,000 patients annually, was commended for its redesigned triage process, interdisciplinary huddles, professional development programs, and successful implementation of new technology.

“Our ED, located in the heart of the Bronx, is a place where our team is constantly navigating decisions that carry the weight of saving lives,” said Janine Llamzon, assistant vice president of Emergency Service Line at Montefiore Einstein and assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “With teamwork, trust and shared purpose, we bring hope and healing – this is why we earned the Lantern Award. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Initiatives such as pairing experienced professionals with novice nurses are enhancing confidence and clinical skills among new emergency nurses. Emely Gonzalez, an eight-year veteran nurse in the department noted this mentorship as “invaluable.”

“Working as an ED nurse was a dream of mine since middle school,” said Gonzalez. “My coworkers have become my family and our structured debriefing sessions enable us to reflect, learn and support each other.”

The hospital’s culture of continuous learning has driven clinical improvements like moving patients who can be upright to areas designed for their level of care. This change has improved communication, expedited care delivery, and maintained patient privacy.

Supporting these initiatives is an electronic tracking board embedded in health records for monitoring test completion times effectively. A mobile medication scanning device now aids accurate medication dosing in real-time.

“Having new technology at our fingertips enables us to best advocate on our patients’ behalf,” said Kayla McFarlane, clinical director of the Emergency Department – Weiler Division. “I’m inspired by the transformative advances we’ve already seen.”

In 2024 The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore also received the Lantern Award.
