In a recent episode of the Newswise Curious by Nature podcast, Edward Yoon, MD, chief of interventional radiology at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), described a new treatment aimed at a specific form of back pain.

Dr. Yoon spoke about basivertebral nerve ablation, which is a minimally invasive procedure that addresses vertebrogenic back pain. This type of pain is associated with inflammation in the endplates of the spine and can be identified on MRI scans as Modic changes. The identification through imaging helps determine which patients are likely to benefit from this procedure.

According to Dr. Yoon, “Unlike injections that offer temporary relief, this treatment can provide long-lasting or even permanent improvement, because the targeted nerve typically does not grow back.”
