Speaker Carl Heastie, along with Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay, continued his annual statewide tour in Suffolk County. They announced significant funding for the Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter and the Port Jefferson Fire District.

During their visit to the Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter, Heastie and Kassay announced $300,000 in funding. This includes $250,000 for operations and $50,000 for replacing the roof on the main building and veterinary clinic. The nonprofit organization works to improve the lives of abused, abandoned, and homeless animals by providing medical treatment and finding them permanent homes.

Heastie expressed that his tour allows him to see firsthand the challenges communities face. “The funding Assemblywoman Kassay and I announced will help…Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter to continue to find loving homes for pets,” he said.

Assemblywoman Kassay highlighted the dedication of first responders in Port Jefferson despite challenging conditions. She thanked Speaker Heastie for his support.

In addition to visiting the animal shelter, Heastie and Kassay toured the Port Jefferson Fire District. They were accompanied by local officials including Chairman David Okst. During this visit, they announced $65,000 in funding for a feasibility study aimed at relocating fire district facilities due to flooding issues.

The fire district has faced severe flooding three times in six years due to heavy rainstorms. These events have required firefighters to move equipment to higher ground while managing repair costs afterward.
