Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 8th district since 2013, marked the fifth anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol with a series of statements on social media reflecting on the events and their aftermath.

On January 6, 2026, Jeffries posted: “Five years ago today, a violent mob brutally attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Their mission was to overturn a free and fair election. We will never allow extremists to whitewash their treachery.” (January 6, 2026)

Later that day, he noted actions by House Democrats in response to the anniversary: “Five years after supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, @HouseDemocrats are holding an unofficial hearing featuring testimony from former law enforcement, state officials and Americans who witnessed the attack.” (January 6, 2026)

In another post referencing testimony from Pamela Hemphill—referred to as “MAGA Granny”—Jeffries wrote: “Powerful testimony from MAGA Granny Pamela Hemphill. She rejected Donald Trump’s pardon for what she did on January 6. And accepted responsibility for believing the lies that were told about the election.” (January 6, 2026)

Jeffries has represented New York’s 8th District in Congress since succeeding Edolphus Towns in 2013 and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012. Born in Brooklyn in 1970 and currently residing there, Jeffries holds degrees from Binghamton University and New York University School of Law.
