Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 8th district since 2013, posted a series of tweets criticizing recent actions by Texas Republicans and the Department of Justice. Jeffries, who succeeded Edolphus Towns in Congress and previously served in the New York State Assembly, addressed issues related to gerrymandering and alleged political retaliation.

On August 23, 2025, Jeffries commented on legislative activity in Texas: “Texas Republicans passed their extremely partisan gerrymandered map in the dead of night. Why? That’s when spineless thieves operate.”

Later that day, he addressed actions involving high-profile public officials and former President Donald Trump: “Attorney General Tish James, Senator Adam Schiff and Ambassador John Bolton dared to challenge Donald Trump. That is why the Department of Justice has been vengefully weaponized against them. We will never bend the knee to far right extremists.”

The following day, on August 24, Jeffries reiterated his opposition to what he described as efforts to manipulate election outcomes: “We will not let corrupt Republicans gerrymander the congressional map. And rig the midterm elections. Stop. The. Steal.”

Gerrymandering—the process of drawing electoral district boundaries for political advantage—has been a contentious issue nationally, with debates over its impact on representation and election outcomes.

Jeffries was born in Brooklyn in 1970 and continues to reside there today. He graduated from Binghamton University with a BA in 1992 before earning his JD from New York University in 1997.
