Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 8th district since 2013, has recently used his social media platform to comment on political developments in Texas regarding congressional redistricting. In a series of posts between August 3 and August 5, 2025, Jeffries addressed the actions of both Texas Republicans and Democrats.
On August 3, Jeffries wrote: “Republicans are afraid to face voters in a free and fair election. That’s the reason the extremists want to gerrymander the Texas congressional map and steal five seats. Look in the mirror and you’ll see the face of a coward.”
The following day, he posted: “My statement in support of the principled opposition by Democrats in the Texas state legislature.” On August 5, he added: “Texas Democrats have courageously refused to rubber stamp Donald Trump’s viciously gerrymandered congressional map. Republicans are threatening to arrest and prosecute them in response. We won’t bend the knee to the malignant extremists.”
Jeffries’ comments come amid heightened tensions over redistricting efforts in Texas. The process of redrawing congressional maps has been contentious nationwide, with accusations from both parties regarding gerrymandering—manipulating district boundaries for political advantage.
A native of Brooklyn born in 1970, Jeffries has represented New York’s 8th District since replacing Edolphus Towns in Congress. Before his current role, he served in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012. He holds a BA from Binghamton University (1992) and a JD from New York University (1997).
