Grace Meng, U.S. Congresswoman representing New York’s 6th district since 2013, recently shared reflections and updates on her official X account regarding the anniversary of the January 6th Capitol attack, community engagement in Queens, and concerns over a recent law enforcement incident.
On January 6, 2026, Meng marked the five-year anniversary of the Capitol riot by recalling her personal experience: “Tonight my colleagues and I stood together to commemorate five years since the January 6th attack on our United States Capitol. On that day I was barricaded in a room off the House floor as an angry mob marched right outside my door. I feared for my life and called loved ones” (January 6, 2026).
The following day, Meng highlighted her participation in a local literacy event: “A wonderful afternoon spent with author Crystal Velasquez reading her book ‘Elmer and the Talent Show’ to kids at Queens Public Library! It was great to see so many students and families participating—moments like these spark a lifelong love of reading and strengthen our Queens” (January 7, 2026).
Later on January 7, Meng addressed concerns about a fatal incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis: “ICE shot and killed a U.S. citizen in Minneapolis, and the initial accounts are deeply disturbing. They raise many questions about why agents were in the area, who they were targeting, and why lethal force was used that DHS must answer. This unnecessary and tragic death demands” (January 7, 2026).
Meng has served as representative for New York’s 6th district since replacing Gary Ackerman in Congress in 2013. Prior to her current role, she served in the New York State Assembly from 2009 to 2012. Born in New York City in 1975 and currently residing in Queens, Meng graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in 1997 before earning her JD from Yeshiva University in 2002.
