Grace Meng, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 6th district since 2013, has recently expressed her concerns and observations on social media regarding various pressing issues. Her tweets highlight both personal empathy for disaster-stricken communities and criticism of political decisions affecting American families.
On July 6, Meng conveyed her condolences to those affected by severe flooding in Texas. She stated, “My thoughts are with families and communities in Texas dealing with catastrophic flooding this weekend. I am praying for those who lost or are missing their loved ones, especially the parents who have tragically lost their young children.” In addition to expressing sympathy, she acknowledged the efforts of first responders involved in relief operations.
The following day, on July 7, Meng addressed economic challenges faced by Americans across the nation. She criticized the Republican Party’s policies by tweeting that “Across the country, Americans are struggling to make ends meet. The GOP promised to put America First & lower costs for hardworking families.” However, she argued that instead of fulfilling these promises, they were cutting essential services such as health care and food assistance.
Later that day, Meng focused on potential impacts specific to her home state of New York due to recent legislative actions. She tweeted about a budget bill proposed by the GOP that could affect numerous households: “Thanks to the GOP’s big ugly budget bill, 300,000 New York households may lose their SNAP benefits.” She criticized this decision as prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires over providing food assistance to needy families.
Grace Meng was born in New York City in 1975 and currently resides in Queens. Before joining Congress in 2013 after succeeding Gary Ackerman, she served in the New York State Assembly from 2009 until 2012. An alumna of the University of Michigan and Yeshiva University’s law school, Meng has been actively involved in addressing community needs throughout her career.
