George Lombard Jr., the top prospect for the New York Yankees, hit a solo home run in the eighth inning during Somerset’s 8-5 loss to Richmond at CarMax Park, according to an April 22 report. The home run marked his second in as many games and was notable as it came against left-handed pitcher Jack Choate of the Giants.
Lombard has shown improvement against left-handed pitching this season, after hitting just .184 with a .685 on-base plus slugging percentage against southpaws in 2025. So far this year, he is 7-for-19 with three extra-base hits off left-handers. Overall, Lombard is off to a fast start in Double-A for the Somerset Patriots, posting a .382 batting average and a .709 slugging percentage through his first 14 games.
The Yankees’ first-round pick from the 2023 draft is one of only ten players in the Eastern League who are age-21 or younger and receiving regular playing time. Despite being nearly three years younger than most players at this level, Lombard entered Tuesday night ranked among the league leaders in several offensive categories including OPS (on-base plus slugging), wOBA (weighted on-base average), and wRC+ (weighted runs created plus).
Maintaining such numbers over an entire season would be unusual; last year only one full-season minor leaguer finished with a wRC+ above 178—Kevin McGonigle—who recently signed a record contract extension with Detroit. Konnor Griffin, currently MLB’s top prospect, posted a lower mark while advancing through multiple levels.
Other highlights from Tuesday included Anthony Volpe homering during his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Kaeden Kent hitting a walk-off home run for High-A Hudson Valley.
