St. John’s baseball players Ayden Frey and Nick Romer were named to the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll on Apr. 27, according to an announcement from the conference office. This recognition marks the sixth consecutive week that St. John’s has had representation on the weekly honors list, with Frey and Romer earning their first selections.
The achievement is notable as it is the first time in over twenty years that two student-athletes from St. John’s have received weekly recognitions for four straight weeks.
During a four-game stretch that included a midweek matchup at Rutgers and a key series against Xavier, both players delivered strong performances. Frey started all four games, posting a .400 batting average with eight hits in eighteen at-bats, five runs scored, three doubles, five runs batted in, and two walks. He registered at least one hit in each game.
Frey’s week began with a 2-for-5 showing at Rutgers where he scored twice and drove in one run. In the opening game against Xavier, he went 2-for-5 again with two doubles, two RBIs, and another run scored during a 12-7 win. In game two of the series, Frey had three hits including a game-tying hit in the ninth inning to help secure an extra-inning victory for St. John’s.
Romer appeared as a relief pitcher in three games during the week: once against Rutgers and twice versus Xavier. The freshman right-hander pitched 3.1 innings overall while allowing only one run on three hits. His performance included pitching a scoreless tenth inning in game two of the Xavier series to earn his first collegiate win.
Looking ahead, Frey, Romer and their teammates will play Hofstra on Tuesday at University Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
