The Freelancers Union announced on Apr. 8 that the American healthcare system has been voted the biggest challenge facing freelancers, following four rounds of its Freelancer Madness competition.
The ranking was determined by votes from freelancers who participated in the bracket-style contest, which compared sixteen common challenges in freelancing. The American healthcare system surpassed other contenders, including the cost of living, highlighting ongoing concerns about access to affordable and comprehensive health coverage for independent workers.
According to the Freelancers Union, healthcare remains a major obstacle because insurance is often tied to traditional employment. This leaves many freelancers with limited options and higher costs for coverage. The organization noted that recent legislation—the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” Act passed in July 2025—has worsened conditions by ending premium subsidies for state marketplace health plans, increasing administrative barriers for those seeking coverage through these marketplaces, and reducing Medicaid support.
A survey conducted by the Freelancers Union in late 2025 found that 91% of respondents want Affordable Care Act subsidies extended. Additionally, 82% said access to healthcare influences their voting decisions—a significant factor as midterm elections approach in June 2026.
While all sixteen issues highlighted in Freelancer Madness were considered important pain points by participants, the union said it is working toward solutions to address these ongoing challenges.
