FOIA Request to CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice by the NYC Gazette. The request seeks specific records concerning Chinese National students at the university. The NYC Gazette is working in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies and promoting transparency.
The FOIA request asks for several categories of information. Firstly, it requests documents or lists that show all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If this information is protected, a total number of such students broken down by department is requested instead.
Secondly, the request seeks documents detailing scholarships received by Chinese National students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Furthermore, if not included in the previous category, it asks for a list of recipients of scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Additionally, the request calls for any policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to protect intellectual property and other confidential information.
The NYC Gazette has requested this information in an electronic format and has also applied for a fee waiver citing their role as media professionals responsible for gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable.
Our team will continue to keep you updated as we gather and report news related to this request and other matters of public interest. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further clarification regarding this matter.
