FOIA Request to CUNY City College regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.

The NYC Gazette has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to CUNY City College seeking detailed records concerning Chinese National students enrolled at the institution. The request, sent on June 16, 2025, aims to gather comprehensive data about these students and the university’s policies related to them.

The request includes four specific inquiries. Firstly, it seeks documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If privacy concerns arise, the request asks for a total count of such students and a breakdown by department. Secondly, it requests information on scholarships received by these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Thirdly, it asks for details about scholarships granted by entities affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council. Lastly, the request seeks any university policies or procedures in place to monitor students for protecting intellectual property and confidential information.

This FOIA request is made on behalf of both NYC Gazette and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As part of their journalistic duty to provide transparency and hold public institutions accountable, they have requested this information under New York’s Freedom of Information Law. They also seek a fee waiver due to their role in media dissemination.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
